A reminder that you don't have to prove yourself

Everyone else doesn't need to understand this yet...

Cru’s Letter

Personal growth is a quiet pursuit and you have to be okay with that…

When you do real work on yourself, it’s compelling to try and communicate that progress to other people but that’s not an easy thing to do.

When I think about the general population’s understanding of progress, a few things come to mind:

  • money

  • bodyweight changes

  • productivity

What do these all have in common? They’re easily quantifiable.

It’s not hard to understand that making more money is valuable when you can see the numbers in your bank account go up. It’s not hard to see that someone got healthier because the number on their scale is lower.

These forms of progress are decent but in my eyes, there’s a more true form of growth and it’s nearly impossible to quantify. Simply put, it’s what you think of yourself and how you act because of that.

Think: Self respect, discipline, abundance thinking, fulfillment.

If you started to respect yourself more, is there really an easy way to illustrate that to someone? Can you point to a number in your fulfillment and purpose account to show that your pursuit is worthy?

Unfortunately, no.

This is why the pursuit of real personal growth is a quiet one. It’s not until you meet the kind of people that see past the simple metrics, that you’ll be able to prove the value in taking the harder path or living based on principle.

I say all of this because I know how hard it is to stay on that quiet pursuit and we can all use a reminder of what matters.

Praise and attention is not the real currency because it’s not all made equal. Cultivating a version of yourself that you’re proud of is the currency because otherwise, praise and attention will only highlight your emptiness.

The draw to “flex” and become a celebrity has a pretty strong draw because it seems to work so well in today's world but money and fame is nothing but an amplifier of who you are when nobody’s around and there’s nothing to buy.

If you feel like giving in because nobody gets it, take a deep breath and stay the course.

I’ll be right there with you.
