Cru’s Letter
Getting fit is easy IF you have a rock solid mentality.
People reach out to me all the time about getting the right workout plan, nutrition plan, etc. but what they seem to be missing is the fact that the effectiveness of these “plans” actually comes down to the commitment of the person carrying it out. Now, of course some workout plans are better than others but especially for beginners, the best workout plan is going to be the one that you can stick to for a long time.
Sometimes, the things we do are more symbolic than practical because it’d be better to do an “okay” fitness routine with perfect consistency than it would be to do the best workout plan in the world for a week and then quit. Building that discipline will be a much greater tool in the long run because then when you find the perfect workout plan (it doesn’t exist) you’ll be able to apply your disciplined mind to that and watch it compound.
What our biology tells us is that we need to move our bodies daily. When we don’t fulfill this responsibility, things get way out of whack… not just physically.
In this context, stress is really interesting because the remedy for stress is more stress.
Imagine this: You had a tough conversation with someone and your mind won’t stop spiraling about it. You start to get anxious and overwhelmed as you think about what you should’ve said and why they responded the way they did. Now, because you know physical activity is one of the best ways to calm spiraling thoughts, you get in a really hot sauna and push yourself to say in there past your comfort zone. As the physical experience gets harder and harder, your ability to spiral about the tough conversation from earlier will lessen.
Now of course the stress of the sauna is no walk in the park but it sure as hell is a healthier struggle than obsession over something you can’t change. In the moments of overwhelm like the tough conversation example, it’ll be really difficult to choose the sauna over a tv show and some snacks but this is where a disciplined AND self-respecting mentality really start to shine.
How do you get that discipline and self-respect? You stop waiting until you find the perfect plan to take action on becoming better.
Imperfect action is better than perfect inaction but sometimes it’s hard to feel ready to start.
Thing is… you never will feel ready.
Think about this:
Do you need more discipline to be able to get started or do you need to get started to build more discipline?
Chicken or the egg?
I suppose this letter can’t do the work for you but I hope you can take this small moment of clarity and action-taking permission, and turn that into a decision to start.
