The BEST way to get fit

It just might be fun at same time...

I think the best way to get fit is through doing something you actually enjoy.

When cultivating a more capable and fit-looking body is just a byproduct of an engaging hobby, the process becomes a lot more enjoyable. To see progress in your physique takes such a long time and it gets really frustrating when that’s the only purpose behind exercising because it’ll feel like it’s “not working” for months.

The beautiful part about implementing fun into your fitness pursuit is that progress actually becomes so much more available.

Take handstands for example (this was an early obsession of mine)…

If you were to practice them every day for a week, I bet you could go from zero seconds to five (that’s pretty fricken awesome). If you were only focused on your physical appearance, however, I can almost guarantee you’ll never see substantial change in seven days.

In certain pockets of our culture, we’ve started to appreciate exercise so much that in many ways, it has become it’s own sport. I can’t say this is a bad thing whatsoever but I always seek to remind people that skill building is a really important thing to pursue as well.

Traditional sports require very specific coordination which I think is amazing for mental sharpness and the ability to learn in general. Also, most people past a certain age will stop trying to learn new things even though their lack of ability to do so just lives in their mind.

The “grind” of capacity or strength-based exercise is necessary and I think it’s something we should all be doing. I do, however, think that more people would enjoy maintaining their fitness if it was paired with mentally stimulating skill-building.

Here are a few physical skills to consider learning:

  • backflip (who doesn’t love a good flip)

  • handstand/headstand (headstand is much easier)

  • wheelie on a bike

  • juggling (soccer version, hand version, golf version)

  • badminton (best sport ever)

The cool thing is that some really impressive skills can be learned in a short amount of time and the more things you learn, the better you get at the skill of learning itself.

Challenge yourself and I think you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish.
