Your hobbies don’t belong on the back burner.

Zoom out with me for a second and think of how ridiculous it is that you’re supposed to do the things you love in life only when you have some extra time and energy to spare…

Your entire life should REVOLVE around the things you love not just maybe finding some time for them.

Hobbies that don’t make money seem like a waste of time to most people because creativity, skill building, personal progression, etc. all fall below income on the importance list.

That said, I can’t really criticize that perspective when the way you “win” in today’s world is by being the most productive. I would, however, just remind you that if you made it to the end of your life and all you did was “be productive” I think you’d be disappointed.

I could go into this idea that if you spend enough time doing what you love, you’ll probably find a way to make a living doing it but maybe that feels a little too wishful. The thing is, your passions are closely tied to your purpose and when you actively dismiss the things you’re passionate about, you live a less purposeful life.

I personally think that the key to a fulfilling life on this earth is to feel like you have a reason to be here in the first place so this is where your “hobbies” mean a little bit more than you may think.

Side note: The word hobby sounds so weak and silly. Interesting how that’s used to describe the things you enjoy…

If your hobbies don’t belong on the back burner, where do they belong?

In your calendar as prominently as that meeting with your co-worker.

If you don’t make time for your passions, they won’t happen by accident so it’s important to plan them out like you would anything else.

Something to note is that “daily” isn’t always the metric for doing something consistently. Maybe you love cooking huge meals for a group of people you love but it just isn’t feasible to do that every day. If you do it once a week/month but kept it up every single week/month, then that would be perfectly consistent.

It’s important to be disciplined and do things you don’t like but you can’t forget to be disciplined in prioritizing the things you love because isn’t that kinda what life is all about?
