Cru’s Letter
A few days ago, I was on a call with a 1:1 client, Michael, talking about intentionality and why it matters. He’s done an incredible amount of work on his mindset and lifestyle to where every new goal has the same action item: Be more intentional about it.
Intentionality is the conversation between “I should” and “I did” meaning that the only way to turn a hypothetical behavior into something you actually do is by making it central to your focus.
When it comes to things like focus, memory, etc. it can be hard to boil them down to an action any simpler than the concept itself. How do you focus? Well… focus. How do you remember something? Well… remember it.
In attempt to be more helpful, I’ve done a lot of thinking on how exactly to exercise the intentionality muscle…
If you told yourself to remember something right before you went to bed, would you remember it in the morning?
How long would it take to remember?
A very clear marker of an intentional mind is being able to access the memory immediately.
The way to work on this is by fabricating urgency.
Tell yourself that it’s important you remember. Repeat that… a lot. The more attention you can bring to it in your mind, the more likely your mind is to gravitate back to it in the morning.
So, try this out tonight. Open the loop of telling yourself to remember a certain word, phrase, or thing you need to get done. Then, report back in the morning.
Work on this until you’re able to reliably close the loop as soon as you come into consciousness. Eventually, you’ll have no doubt that when you say you ought to improve in an area of your life, you can access enough intention to actually make it happen.
