Cru’s Letter

A beautiful life is not always pretty.

It’s much easier to sell “pretty” so that’s why your goals are advertised very nicely.

What you’ve gotta realize is that discipline feels like shit until it serves you and once it serves you, it feels like shit again because doing hard work is uncomfortable. You will never find a way around the hard work so you can either accept that right now and get comfortable with discomfort or you can spend your life doing mental gymnastics to make yourself believe you can avoid it all together.

When I wake up every morning to go take an ice bath, do you think I’m excited about it?

Hard no.

It’s the last thing I want to do and I’m fighting off mental weakness every single time. Now, when I overcome that overwhelming 3 minutes, I’m so appreciative for the beauty I find in that ritual but the way there wasn’t pretty or satisfying.

Months ago, when I sprained my foot and ankle and did my mile run on crutches for 30 days, do you think that was any different? Crutches rubbing the skin off my armpits, my foot throbbing, cuss words flying into the cold air… it’s not pretty.

Sometimes you can become more fulfilled or joyful in life at seemingly no cost (implementing simple positive behaviors) but sometimes you gotta work yourself to tears to see what you’re made of.

Sometimes your body needs to hurt to learn about its limits.

Sometimes you gotta hate something and do it anyways when it makes you a better person.

If you’re not cut out to endure a bit of hardship, you probably aren’t cut out for much of anything valuable. Once you can let go of this fake dream that there’s a way to get around your discomfort zone, you will then unlock a completely different version of yourself.
