Here's why you should keep promises to yourself
It changes everything...
Cru’s Letter
Have you ever spent years doing something every day no matter what?
I don’t think most people get to say yes to that question except for brushing your teeth… but even that might be a stretch.
I’ve found a world of value in keeping open ended promises to myself and I wish more people could experience the kind of confidence and self respect that comes from it.
For me, it started with the daily morning run. As of now, I’ve run every morning of my life for the last 7+ years.
Somewhere around 2600 days straight for context.
For my whole life growing up, it always made me so frustrated to know that when people claimed to do something every day, it was a lie 9 times out of 10. I always had this desire to be an undeniable kind of person with no holes in my character so I knew that if I claimed “every day” with anything, it better be 10 out of 10.
I can’t say that my ideas were perfectly refined back in 2018 when I started the run streak but I was certain enough about who I was that knew I should conquer the physical thing I hated most (running) every single day.
The beautiful part about a non-negotiable promise is that you very quickly learn what you’re capable of. For most people, their behavior is driven by what they want or feel like which will always make you quit before you see what’s possible.
When NOT following through is an option, you’ll eventually end up choosing it but when you take that option away you find out who you really are.
Keeping a promise doesn’t have to be complicated…
It just has to have a reason.
Show up to something you care about no matter how you feel or what the day has to offer and your life will undeniably change for the better.
