Cru’s Letter
We all know the story…
“I grew up with parents that expected the best from me. They’re both doctors. I had to be perfect in school and I felt pressured to follow in their footsteps through/after college.
I can’t say medicine interested me that much but I knew it was the clearest path to making lots of money and my parents proud.
I make a that money now. My parents are comforted by my decision.
People see me as a hero…
But I feel lost.
I can’t leave the path I’m on because that’s where all my security is but I spend my days just waiting for the day off where I can finally relax.
I’m realizing now that I’ve built a life on the foundation of someone else’s priorities and wish I could go back…”
This story isn’t about being a doctor, it’s about being misaligned.
Plenty of people love practicing medicine or any career for that matter but all too many people in this world make their biggest decisions without knowing what they truly care about first.
Decisions out of obligation set you up for a slow burn towards dissatisfaction.
Now, making choices based on your actual priorities takes a lot of self awareness and trust. Other people might want what’s best for you but you have to know that nobody steers you down a path completely absent of their own bias/projections.
If you idolize others too much, you’ll forget that you’re the most well-versed person out there in the science of your own desires…
Listen to your own expertise.
My mom used to always tell me “I wish you would just get a D in your classes and be happy instead of worrying so much”
I knew that she was right (even though I couldn’t take my foot off the gas) and that kind of support from her was quite the gift.
Even if the face of something so fundamental and all-consuming like school, my mom granted me the ability to discern what’s important based on my own thoughts…
What a blessing.
So I’ll ask you, what the hell do you care about?
Once you know the answer, a path forward might seem a bit more clear.
