Cru’s Letter

Most people die before they’re gone because the moment you actually die is when you stop being a kid.

Kids sprint, jump, fall on the ground and then go to sleep to do it again the next day. If you feel like you outgrew that and your body just can’t handle it anymore, ask yourself, did you stop being able to move like that because you got old or did you get old because you stopped moving like that?

When I was really young, I always hated when people would complain about getting old because it seemed like the symptoms came from the fact that they wouldn’t shut up about it. It was almost a competition on a societal level to see how quickly everybody could become lame. I remember in fifth grade, a girl in my class said the classic “I’m getting old” line and unfortunately wasn’t being sarcastic. I don’t think my eyes could’ve rolled further back in my head because I couldn’t help but wonder, why are people so enthralled by the idea of becoming less capable and more boring…

If you think back to your youngest self, you might see yourself as naive or irrational but I’d encourage you to give credit where credit is due. Your youngest self wasn’t afraid to speak up because the filter hadn’t even been developed… what a unique kind of confidence.

Your youngest self was durable… probably could’ve fallen off the roof and bounced back after just a measly few minutes of crying.

Your youngest self had the biggest dreams and didn’t really consider that it was possible for them to not work out.

Your youngest self was pretty damn cool and I suggest you take a page out of their book because it just might make you smarter and more capable than all of the adults that supposedly know what they’re doing.

Personally, I’ve made it a massive principle in my life to never speak or act myself into a lesser state. As I get older, life becomes better because after all, it’s a choice. I refuse to indulge in the culture of surrender because along with that comes a draining of your soul.

I revere my youngest self because he was right. When adults warn you saying, “just wait until you’re older,” they’re just projecting. When they say that getting older is a bad thing, just know it’s a lie that comes from a tired soul.

The only reason I can see through this elderly spell is because I myself am still a kid and that’ll remain true for the rest of my life.
